THE PROJECT

Historical Perspectives on Gendered State Violence in the United States was founded in 2021 by Liz Barnes, Lizzie Evens, and Grace Watkins. Historians of emancipation, the Progressive Era, and the mid-twentieth century respectively, we recognised that we could enrich our understandings of state violence if we situated our research within the longer timeline of US history. The first phase of the project was funded by the British Association for American Studies (BAAS) and the Rothermere American Institute (RAI), and involved an event series and collaborating with fellow junior scholars to create this site.
